FAQ

Questions we get most often about our Kaʻū coffee, our shipping, and the farm. If yours is not here, call us at (808) 936-3362 or email info@mirandasfarms.com.

Is your coffee really 100% Kaʻū?

Yes. Every bag we sell was grown on our own family farm in Kaʻū, on the south slope of Mauna Loa. We farm two blocks at different elevations — 1,600 feet in Pahala and 2,100 feet in Naalehu — and we never blend our coffee with beans from anywhere else.

This is worth checking whenever you buy Hawaiian coffee. A bag labelled a “blend” can legally contain only a small fraction of Hawaiian coffee, with the rest sourced from elsewhere. Ours says 100% because it is.

What is the difference between Typica, Red Catuai, Yellow Caturra and Peaberry?

They are different varieties of coffee tree, and they taste different.

  • Typica — the original arabica. Clean and silky, with brown sugar, almond and a soft citrus lift. Our best seller and the easiest place to start.
  • Red Catuai — balanced and smooth, with cocoa, toasted almond and a gentle cherry finish. The most versatile of the four.
  • Yellow Caturra — our small lot. Honey sweetness, tropical fruit and a bright citrus edge. The most distinctive cup we grow.
  • Peaberry — not a variety but a rare bean. Concentrated and clean, with caramel, pecan and dried cherry, and a fuller body than any flat bean on the farm.

All four are washed-process and hand-picked. If you cannot decide, order two 8 oz bags and compare them side by side.

Should I choose medium or dark roast?

Medium keeps more of what makes each variety distinct — the sweetness, the fruit and the acidity all stay in the cup. If you have not tried our coffee before, order medium.

Dark trades that brightness for spice and cocoa, with a heavier, rounder body. Choose dark if you drink your coffee with milk or cream, or if you prefer a bolder cup.

Whole bean or ground? What grind do you use?

Choose whole bean if you have a grinder at home. Coffee starts losing aroma within minutes of grinding, so grinding just before you brew makes a real difference.

If you choose ground, we grind to a medium setting, which suits drip machines, auto-brewers and pour-over. If you need it coarser for a French press or finer for espresso, mention it in your order notes and we will do our best.

When was my coffee roasted?

The day we packed it. We roast to order in small batches rather than keeping roasted stock on a shelf, so your bag typically leaves Hawaiʻi within one to two business days of being roasted.

How long does it stay fresh, and how should I store it?

Roasted coffee is at its best within two to four weeks of the roast date. It does not spoil after that, but it gradually loses aroma and sweetness.

Keep the bag sealed at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not refrigerate it — moisture is the enemy. Do not freeze it unless you are storing it for months, and if you do, freeze it unopened and thaw the whole bag once.

Green, unroasted coffee is different: green beans keep for many months if stored cool, dry and out of the sun.

How fast do you ship, and do you ship internationally?

We dispatch within one to two business days of your order. Shipping is free on orders over $75, applied automatically at checkout — no code needed.

Yes, we ship internationally. USPS and DHL Express options appear at checkout for addresses outside the United States. Please note that any customs duties or import taxes are set by your country and are the recipient’s responsibility.

Do you sell wholesale?

Yes. We supply cafes, resorts and retailers, and we sell both 5 lb roasted bags and green coffee by the pound.

There are three ways to place a wholesale order:

  • Email info@mirandasfarms.com with your product selection and the quantities you need.
  • Call the farm at (808) 936-3362 and place your order over the phone.
  • Visit us at the farm store in Naalehu and we will work out terms in person.

How do I book a farm tour, and what does it include?

Book on our Farm Tour page, or call (808) 936-3362 to confirm a time.

Tours run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday by reservation, last 60 to 120 minutes, and cost $25 per person with 15% off for larger groups. You will walk the lower and upper farm, see how coffee is grown, picked and processed, taste across our varieties, and have refreshments including a few of our cafe dessert specials. Your guide will be Gabriel, Berta or Nito.

We are on the Hawaiʻi Belt Road between Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and South Point — an easy stop in either direction.

What if my order arrives damaged, or is not right?

Email info@mirandasfarms.com within three weeks of ordering and we will make it right, with a replacement or a refund.

Because coffee is a food product roasted to order, we cannot accept returns for a simple change of mind — but if something is wrong on our end, tell us and we will fix it.
